The Nigerian Sonnet

One whom the Savannah spoke of in glory
The once revered nation
Reduced to a tall tale of a story
Far flung from he who denied colonialism eternal rest with gumption

Writhing in martyr yarned graves
Weeping at the travesty
Descendants have wrought of brave staves
Nationalists bled from with honesty

I try to view the bleeding horizon
I am blocked by the trail of the dead
Untold stories Of native daughters and sons
The forgotten glory of a country once said...

In our desire for change
We have been short changed.
