The Masquerade on the Power Line

The Masquerade on the Power Line
‎They brought us light—
‎wrapped in grammar,
‎delivered in excuses,
‎and billed in prophecy.
‎GenCos beat their drums:
‎“Power has been generated!”
‎Thunder answers from afar,
‎but our bulbs remain spiritually disconnected.
‎DisCos, custodians of darkness,
‎smile like village chiefs at harvest:
‎“No meter? No wahala—
‎we shall estimate your happiness.”
‎Happiness!
‎Measured in candles and curses,
‎in generators that roar like wounded lions,
‎while fuel drinks deeper than sorrow.
‎Then comes the sacred procession,
‎from the archives of signatures,
‎under the calm pen of Goodluck Jonathan—
‎a covenant was signed,
‎half policy, half prayer,
‎fully profitable… to someone.
‎But wait,
‎see them now!
‎Masquerades emerge from the shrine,
‎heaven’s representatives on earth,
‎dancing upon naked distribution lines,
‎their raffia skirts humming with voltage.
‎They perch playfully on transformers,
‎scratching their deified masks
‎with dead wires—
‎wires that once carried hope,
‎now retired into silence.
‎“Is this the light you promised?”
‎one masquerade laughs,
‎teeth glowing brighter than the grid.
‎Another swings from pole to pole,
‎mocking the current that never comes,
‎declaring to the ancestors:
‎“Even spirits now subscribe to darkness!”
‎Below, the theater continues:
‎GenCos lament like widows,
‎“We are owed!”
‎DisCos protest like saints,
‎“We have no meters!”
‎Government chants politically,
‎“Take another bailout, let peace reign.”
‎And the people,
‎the faithful subscribers to confusion—
‎sit beneath this masquerade festival,
‎paying for shadows,
‎renewing darkness monthly.
‎Estimated billing has become divination:
‎“You shall pay for what you did not see,
‎for what did not come,
‎and for what may never exist.”
‎Even the masquerades are amused
‎for once, humans have outperformed spirits
‎in the art of illusion.
‎So tell me,
‎is this electricity,
‎or a sacred line masquerade?
‎Where wires are altars,
‎darkness is tradition,
‎and every month,
‎we all gather ‎to pay homage
‎to the gods of nothing.
