The last flame

They tell me 'we' are strong together,

To build a wall in all kind of weather.

But the moment I stood just outside the crowd,

My ideas too different, my voice too loud,

They didn't call it 'strength.' They called it 'sin,'

And that’s when the witch trials begin.

They tied me tightly to the tree,

Because they feared what they couldn't see.

A strong community, or so they say,

But they cast the first stone and they walked away.

But where did the real support system lie?

Not with the town as they left me to die.

Not with the crowd who were quick to condemn,

Not a single word offered by them.

It came from the earth, from the ground below,

From the only faithful friend I know.

My old 'kin,' now all bone and dust,

But offering a kindness and quiet trust.

He holds up the light with an open hand,

The only love in this desolate land.

This is the family that doesn't forsake,

Even while waiting beside the stake.
